Beginning Android Tablet Programming, Starting with Android Honeycomb for Tablets

Creator: Robbie Matthews | Computers - 2012-02-01

Beginning Android Tablet Programming starts off by showing how to get your system ready for Android tablet programming.

Publisher: Apress

About this book
Beginning Android Tablet Programming starts off by showing how to get your system ready for Android tablet programming. You won't need any previous Android experience, because you'll learn all about the basic structure of an Android program and how the Android operating system works—and then you'll learn how to write your first Android tablet application from scratch! Beginning Android Tablet Programming then equips you to build a set of interesting and fully-working Android tablet applications. These projects will give you the inspiration and insights to build your own Android programs in the future. You'll be introduced to 2D programming, and you'll see what you can do with a touch screen interface and the Honeycomb SDK. Of course, 3D programming is even more alluring for many programmers. If that includes you, you'll learn about how Honeycomb has changed the game for Android graphics programming, and get your first taste of 3D programming on an Android tablet. Lights, camera, action! You'll learn along the way how Android Honeycomb gives you access, through your programming, to all those interesting sensors that tablet computers are equipped with today—beyond the touch screen itself. You'll learn, for example, how you to use a tablet GPS sensor to locate your car! You'll also discover how you can access files on your tablet—or on the web—through programming, and then build on that insight to create your own file browser application. This Android project contains many useful coding techniques appropriate for many situations you might encounter in your future programming Android tablet applications; you'll be glad to have them under your belt. So do you want to write programs that can receive and send reminder messages via SMS? Do you want to write your first 2D or 3D game on Android? Perhaps you'd like to write an application that sorts out all your contacts for you! Beginning Android Tablet Programming introduces you to Android tablet programming, and shows how you can program your Android tablet from scratch to do what you want!

Good quality, and good enough for my use.

My $600 Samsung Galaxy tablet died when the battery finally refused to take a charge, and I evaluated my real needs. I use the tablet for email, some web browsing, a feed reader and reading e-books, so I knew I didn't need a top of the line tablet costing 8 to 10 times this much. The build quality seems every bit as good as my old Galaxy tablet, and the size and weight is just a bit smaller and lighter. At this price I'm not too concerned with protecting the screen or case, so I just bought the and it fits perfectly. There's an odd sense of freedom knowing that the replacement product was about 1/6th of the cost of the original tablet. Because tablet batteries are not replaceable by mere mortals, and they usually wear out in about five years, if this tablet lasts a year I'll be very happy. Lenovo TAB 10 personal review of my purchase

Received the Lenovo TAB 10 [Model: Lenovo TB-X103F] on March 4, 2017. MFG DATE: 9-15-2016 CPU: APQ 8009 [Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 which is an updated version of the SG 210, according to the Qualcomm website. [That's good] Arrived in excellent condition with 7000mAh battery half charged. Followed instructions to bring over files and apps. from my other tablet, worked like a charm. It's Android 6.0.1 according to "About" the tablet in the settings. Had 3 software build updates, installed one at a time, with success. It takes a while so let it do it's thing and follow the directions as it gives them to you. Dolby Atmos sound is good, loud enough for us. Ran all my apps (50+) fine. Watched golf on streaming app(NBC Sports) works good. No glitches. My main usage is various apps.,reading (Kindle and Nook), email, research on the net, sports videos, some camera use. Great basic tablet for Amazon fans

As a background, I am a retired Information Systems professional and I am writing my first impressions of the NEW Fire HD 8 released on September 21, 2016 from the perspective of being a long-term Kindle user. I have all the current e-readers and Fire devices from Amazon including the basic Kindle, the Paperwhite (2013,2014,2015 models), the Fire HD6, Fire HD7, Fire HDX7 and Fire HDX8.9 (3rd and 4th generation), the old Fire HD 8 and the Fire HD 10. Here is a summary of my initial impressions of the new Fire HD8.Amazon has replaced the original HD 8 released in 2015 with an “All-New” HD 8. Amazon is also removing the Fire HD6, which is a shame as it is a great little tablet. The new HD 8 differs from the old version as follows:BEST NEW FEATURE:The price has been reduced! The 16 GB version of the old device cost $169.99 with special offers (ads). The new 16 GB version costs 89.99 and you can get a 32 HB version for $30 more... 5/5 Desert Rat (The great American desert) - See all my reviews, September 24, 2016

Confused about which model to buy? Read this for a non-techie review

Customer Video Review Length:: 2:22 Mins One advantage of a big family is you get to review everyone’s tech. Over the years this has included several iPads, the entire Amazon Fire range, and now this - the Fire 8 released September 2016. I bought this for my daughter, (13 going on 20), and she loves it.As I work in IT, I'm aware just how confusing technology can be, so I'll avoid references to jargon, and focus on the experience instead. I’ve broken the review up into sections so you can skip the bits you’re less interested in.I’ll compare this device to the rest of the small Amazon Fire range, in particular the cheaper Fire 7” and Fire 6” HD in addition to the four times more expensive iPad Mini 4.Quick Summary============While the screen resolution is not quite up to the “retina” of the more expensive iPad, this is a much better experience than the cheaper 7” device, and the... 4/5 John Ryan (London, UK) - See all my reviews, September 25, 2016

Amazon did it right this time, really enjoying my tablet! (3 updates)

I am thrilled with the new Fire HD8 - even before it gets Alexa! At that time I will likely be ecstatic! I am far from a tablet novice - I had the original fire; the $50 fire; the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3; and the Galaxy Tab S 10.5. My phones have always been Samsung flagship phones, currently the S7 Edge. I say this to show that I 1) have experience with kindle fires, and 2) generally tend to have high standards for my most used devices -- I KNOW what is a good tablet and what is a so-so tablet. Admittedly, my previous fires have been "so-so", but I wanted something inexpensive yet adequate to take places with me instead of my Galaxy Tab S 10.5.My HD8 is the 32gb option, with offers. Most users will likely be fine with 16gb and perhaps an added 32gb or 64gb SD card. However, I know how I use my devices, so went with the 32gb option, as well as a 64gb micro SD card. In the 48 hours I have had my new Fire, it has become my device of choice, even over my $500 samsung... 4/5 MaGold (Keep Portland Weird) - See all my reviews, September 23, 2016

This is a steal for $50 as long as you aren;t expecting a "Premium" experience.

I pre-ordered this for my wife mostly to use as a Kindle E-reader as I figured the tablet would be slow and the display would be less than impressive. I was wrong. What a bargain this little beauty is! This model cost $49.00 but it comes with ad's displayed on the lock screen when your tablet is dormant. Once your screen times out, they disappear. You can pay $15.00 up front to get an ad free version so I assumed to unlock the tablet I'd have to spend 15 to 30 seconds looking at an ad for Amazon Prime, or a product from the daily specials section of Amazon.com I abstained from paying for Ad removal and was pleasantly surprised to find that the ads are only on the lock screen and that as soon as I unlock the tablet they disappear immediately. Here are my pros and cons thus far.PRO:Perfect size for Ebooks, and web surfing to alleviate strain on the eyes from my 5" phone displaynice sturdy casing that gives it a nice heft but still weighs in as one... 5/5 G.Hulse (Fayetteville, Ar., US) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) UPDATED: Incredible Value for Under $50!

Customer Video Review Length:: 0:16 MinsUPDATED - After spending quite a bit more time with the device, I would give it a 4.5 due to a few specific gaps that are a bit annoying. However, you are still getting an amazing 7” tablet, with front and rear facing cameras, a gorgeous interface, fairly snappy performance and durability, all for under 50 bucks! I can’t imagine not buying these for myself and my whole family, but not a primary tablet for a techie adult by any means. For background, I have every Kindle, a couple Fires, and multiple tablets from Apple, Microsoft and Samsung. Note that my review with 5 stars considers the value equation, not just performance and how that may or may not compare to other tablets - if you are expecting this to compare to a tablet costing several times more, don't bother. But if you are looking for a great entry level tablet that does most of the things people want, this little tablet definitely delivers the value... 5/5 TM massage - See all my reviews, October 2, 2015

Best Value, Especially with Prime, but beware: mine has 2 dead pixels, Works with GH4 + Antutu Benchmarked!

Customer Video Review Length:: 8:04 Mins$50? Despite the dirt cheap price, i find it to be great for casual use. Videos play nice, games even play nice, text is just not as sexy looking as higher resolution screens. Watch the video for full demo! The short/summed up version: it's the new budget king in the 6-8" size. It's screen is a little lower in resolution but still pleasant to look at, it has enough power for most of the typical tablet tasks, and it shares many of the same features as its higher priced brothers such as front and back cameras, b/g/n wifi, and good overall battery life (minus an hour) My favorite size tablet is 8", so if you're looking at the amazon fire lineup, i would take this over the 6" for sure, and would have a hard time picking the 8" fire at 3x the price. If you're not a prime member, it's still a good tablet, if you are a prime member: it's a great tablet. Possible quality control issue: Mine had two dead pixels (not... 4/5 Darren Levine (NJ/NYC) - See all my reviews, October 2, 2015

This review is from: Fusion5 7" Quad Core 774 IPS Google Android Lollipop 5.1 Tablet PC, 1280800 1GB RAM, 8GB with IPS Display, Dual Camera and Google Play Kids Tablet PC (Personal Computers) I was looking for the best and cheapest tablet for my kids to destroy. I found it right here! It had a good battery life with plenty of storage and a higher resolution screen. Kids will be kids and if it isn't getting beat up then it isn't being used. At least this way when it breaks, it is cheaply replaced. But most importantly, when it is used, it has good quality functions a kid needs to thrive with when it comes to their imagination. My Daughter is a self-proclaimed techy. So hours were spent comparing battery lives, operating systems, and many other key technological selling points. Thank you Fusion5 for your product and price point I am sure they will Love their Christmas Presents. In short, its a fully functional Android tablet. No frills, but does exactly what is advertised. If you are looking for a basic tablet to watch videos or check email, browse the web, YouTube etc.... this works 100% as advertised. Quite happy with bang for the buck. Gave it 4 stars only because the speakers are on the quiet side but that is easy fixed with a my Bluetooth speaker or headphones. Also, its not rocket fast but that was expected for the cost. So you tube takes 2.5 secs to open instead of 1.5.... so what, works fine. I'll get a lot of use out of this and I would recommend to others for a inexpensive android solution. Its about the same size as my wife's old kindle and I found the size for my hand to be just right. Lightweight to hold but feels well built, perfect for use on the couch or before bed.
